How far down the flue we look

Every inspection we do follows the three levels the Chimney Safety Institute of America teaches from NFPA 211. The level depends on what is happening to the house, not on what is cheapest to sell.

  1. Level I

    Every year, with the sweep

The routine annual check of every readily accessible part of the chimney, done during your sweeping or when an appliance is swapped like for like.

  2. Level II

Selling, buying, relining or changing fuel

Called for when the system changes (a new appliance or fuel), in a real estate transaction, before a flue is relined, or after a malfunction.

  3. Level III

Only when I or II finds a serious hazard

The most intensive inspection, reserved for when a Level I or Level II turns up signs of a hidden danger inside the structure.

When Should Your Chimney Be Swept?

At least once a year for any chimney serving a furnace, fireplace, gas or wood appliance, and best before the heating season. Sooner if you see smoke in the room, smell it, or the fire will not draw.

  • Creosote Buildup: the tar-black residue wood smoke leaves on the flue walls
  • Cracks and Leaks: in the crown, the mortar joints and the flue tiles
  • Blockages: nesting animals, debris and soot narrowing the draft
  • Damaged Liner: a cracked or corroded liner no longer protecting the house

One crown, rebuilt from the flue tile out

The concrete cap on this chimney had crumbled back to the brick. It was cut out, rebuilt, and sealed with a waterproof crown coat so the next Pennsylvania winter runs off it.

Before: a crumbled concrete crown and black mesh cap on a brick chimney
Before: crown broken to the brick
After: the same chimney with a rebuilt crown sealed in a white waterproof coat
After: rebuilt and water-proofed

“They cleaned out heavy creosote buildup and repaired the chimney cap perfectly.”

Cameron Powell, Google review. The full review: “I am very satisfied with the chimney repair and cleaning service I received. The workers were courteous, experienced, and explained every step clearly. They cleaned out heavy creosote buildup and repaired the chimney cap perfectly. The entire process was smooth and completed on schedule. I also appreciated their honesty about what repairs were truly necessary. The fireplace now burns more efficiently and safely. I would gladly hire this company again for future maintenance.”

Soot, liners, levels and squirrels

The things homeowners in Cumberland County ask the office most, answered the way the sweeps answer them on the roof.

At least once a year for any chimney serving a furnace, fireplace, gas or wood appliance, ideally before the heating season starts. Also before you light a fireplace that has not been used in a long while, when you are buying or selling a home, after a major storm, or any time you notice smoke, odor or a poor draft.

Level I is the routine annual inspection of the readily accessible parts of the chimney, done during a sweeping or a like-for-like appliance swap. Level II is called for when the system changes (a new appliance or fuel), when a property is sold, before a flue is relined, or after a malfunction or chimney fire. Level III is the most intensive and is only used when a Level I or II finds signs of a serious hidden hazard. These levels come from the National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 211, as taught by the Chimney Safety Institute of America.

Stainless steel is suitable for wood burning, gas or oil appliances. Aluminum liners are an inexpensive alternative for some medium efficiency gas applications only. We look at the appliance and the flue before recommending either one.

No. Our sweeps work dust-free, sealing off the fireplace or appliance opening and running vacuum containment while the flue is brushed, so the soot and creosote leave with us.

Yes. Animal and nest removal is one of our regular services. We clear the animal and the nesting material out of the flue and smoke chamber, then fit a screened chimney cap so it cannot happen again.

Yes, including free standing wood stoves and pellet stoves you purchased somewhere else. We install the stove and the venting it needs.

We work out of our office at 1526 Newville Rd in Carlisle and serve South Central PA: Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Franklin and Dauphin Counties.

“Even told me the chimney did not need to be cleaned.”

Suzanne Eibenwasn’t home when the crew came to put back a fallen chimney access door. They did the job, billed her afterwards, and told her she could skip the cleaning that year. Fully licensed, bonded, and insured is the paperwork; that visit is the reason people call back.
